One Day Virtual Meeting

We are delighted to invite you to the BSSVD Annual Scientific Meeting 2024!

The British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease (BSSVD) host these annual meetings for the learning, 
debate, thought-provoking discussion and sharing of ideas to improve care in the field of women's and vulval health. 


Event Details

The meeting will focus on topics such medical conditions, VIN & cancer, Lichen Sclerosus and inclusivity and vulval disorders. 

Delegates will receive an event app where they will be able to make notes, view their agenda & much more. 

The meeting link will be emailed out to all registered delegates closer to the event date.

SPEAKERS

PROFESSOR SWATI JHA

Professor Swati Jha is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and a subspecialist in Urogynaecology working at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. She is research active and has over 150 publications, multiple successful research grants and has written 3 books, two of which are on Medicolegal issues in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She is on the editorial board of the TOG journal (RCOG CPD journal) and Best Practice in O and G and is a spokesperson to the RCOG on Pelvic Floor Health.





DR JACLYN LANTHIER

Jaclyn is a vulvar lichen sclerosus advocate from Toronto, Canada. She is the founder & director of The Lost Labia Chronicles, an evidence-based hub for LS education & support. She is on the executive board of Lichen Sclerosus Network, a non-profit organization based in the USA. She is currently enrolled in the EUPATI patient expert training programme to improve her skills in patient advocacy. Jaclyn is passionate about science communication, knowledge translation, improving the quality of life of people with VLS through education & support.




CLARE BAUMHAUER

Clare is an active patient representative and advocate for adults & children with lichen sclerosus & vulval cancer. She is a patient representative for the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UKDCTN) & on Executive Committee. Clare sits on the PAVE group (Patient Advisors for Vulval Research). Clare is a co-investigator on the PEARLS trial & has been a co-applicant for numerous other funding applications. She founded lichen sclerosus & vulval cancer support groups in 2017, the largest of which contains 10,000 members. Clare raises awareness for LS & vulval cancer on social media as well as co running a website. 

DR FIONA LEWIS

Fiona Lewis trained in Dermatology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield & completed her MD thesis on clinical & immunological aspects of lichen sclerosus there. She became a Consultant Dermatologist in 1996 & now runs the Vulval Clinic at St John’s Institute of Dermatology which is a busy tertiary service for complex vulval conditions. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College, London & is programme director for the MSc in Clinical Dermatology. She teaches on all aspects of vulval disease at a local, national & international level & has authored various textbooks on vulval disease, as well as being active in clinical research. She is President Elect of the European College for the Study of Vulval Disease.







DR CAROLIN KLEIN

Dr. Carolin Klein is a sex therapist & Registered Psychologist. She is 
co-founder & co-director of the West Coast Centre for Sex Therapy in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to opening the West Coast Centre for Sex Therapy, she served as Director of the Multidisciplinary Vulvodynia Program at Vancouver Hospital. Her clinical work involves assisting individuals, couples, & other partnership configurations to build & strengthen sexual & relational intimacy; overcome sexual shame, pain, & anxiety; & bring more joy & curiosity into sexuality. She regularly provides workshops & presentations to the general public designed to provide accurate information & challenge unhelpful ideas about sexuality. She is a Development Officer on the board of the Society for Sex Therapy & Research & sits on the medical advisory board for the Lichen Sclerosus Support Network.





DR LISA KIRBY

Lisa is a consultant dermatologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where she has a weekly specialist vulval clinic. Lisa joined the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology at the University of Nottingham in 2020, taking time out of clinical training to carry out research in vulval disease. Lisa's research interest is vulval lichen sclerosus (LS). She was awarded a British Skin Foundation (BSF) & British Association of Dermatologists Trainee Research Award in 2019. Lisa is now a member of the BSF Small Grants Advisory Committee, supporting the charity through reviewing grant applications. Lisa is passionate about improving the care of women with vulval disease through evidence-based practice & education of health professionals. She is a member of the BAD Lichen Planus Guideline Development Group, the BSSVD council & the British Association of Dermatologists Vulval Workstream. She is a founding member of the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UK DCTN) Virtual Journal Club, which aims to improve critical appraisal skills in dermatology trainees.

DR JULIE BOWRING

Dr Julie Bowring is a consultant in sexual and reproductive health at Homerton Hospital, London. She completed her obstetrics and gynaecological training in North West London and further training in sexual and reproductive health at The Royal Free Hospital, London. She has been a BSCCP member since 2009. 

In 2015 she joined Homerton hospital anogenital neoplasia service (HANS), where she trained in high resolution anoscopy (HRA) with Dr Mayura Nathan. She is the gynaecology lead for HANS and sees both women and men in her HRA clinic. Her special interest is managing women with multizonal intraepithelial neoplasia. 



PORTIA GOLDSMITH

Portia has been a Consultant Dermatologist working at the Royal London and Homerton Hospitals for the last 22 years. Prior to that she was a Consultant at the Whittington Hospital for 5 years. Portia qualified in 1983 from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and did her medical training there and at Barnet General Hospital.  Her Dermatology training was at the Chelsea and Westminster, the Middlesex Hospitals and St John’s Hospital for skin disease where she was the patch test senior registrar. Portia's special interest is in Contact Dermatitis but she is very much a general Dermatologist. Portia i an enthusiastic teacher and trainer.




   NICOLA MACDONALD

Nicola has been a consultant gynaecological oncologist since 2006 and is the clinical lead for gynaecological oncology and for teenage & young adult gynaecological oncology at UCLH.  She is the Clinical Network Director for Gynaecological Oncology for the NCL Cancer Alliance.

Her clinical interests include ovarian germ cell tumours, pre-operative optimization, fertility preserving surgery and techniques for minimizing post-operative morbidity.

Her MD thesis explored the molecular basis of endometrial cancers looking at microsatellite instability and PTEN expression.  Her current research interests are in ovarian germ cell tumour management and novel diagnostic methods for endometrial cancer.


DR NINA MADNANI

Nina Madnani is a clinical dermatologist, attached to 2 tertiary - care hospitals in Mumbai, india. She was instrumental in establishing the first “Vulvar Clinic” in india, and setting up the first special interest group on female genital disease (SIG FGD) for her dermatology association (IADVL). This group, plans and executes various CMEs and lecture series across india on various aspects of vulvar disease with the aim of educating and sensitising dermatologists for better patient care. She has won several awards for her work in this field by her National Dermatology Association, and runs a weekly charitable clinic at the P.D. Hinduja National Hospital where she is attached. She is the Chief Editor of “The Atlas of Vulvovaginal Disease in Darker skin Types” which was published in 2023, in which she has contributed several chapters. The atlas boasts of more than 300 images. Nina’s passion is to educate healthcare workers,  and reduce the burden of vulvar disease in India.



  
DR CLAUDIA CHISARI

Dr Claudia Chisari is a Scientist and Chartered Psychologist with a special interest in Vulvodynia. She is one of the world's most cited scientists in this area. 

Claudia did her PhD in Vulvodynia at King's College London, funded by the NIHR. Her PhD developed and tested he first personalised digital intervention in Vulvodynia.

She is currently an Honorary Research Associate at King's College London, part of the Health Psychology Group (IoPPN). Her research currently focuses on developing evidence-based interventions and treatments in Vulvodynia and other types of persistent pelvic pain (Endometriosis, Vaginismus etc). 

Clinically, Claudia has Founded Bloume Health, the first digital care clinic for women with Pelvic pain, where she sees women with pelvic pain.
